   Eating for $1 a Day

Joanie and I decided to do something for those who are less fortunate.   From January 10th until January 16th, Joanie and I limited ourselves to what we could eat on a dollar a day each- Yes, we ate plenty of Ramen Noodles.

 Here are the basic rules:

1)  The dollar included drinks.

2)  We could not eat anything that was in the house that was not purchase with the $14.00 I had for grocery budget.

3)  We could not have other people buy or provide us meals.

4)  (Joanie's Rule) We can not start until after the championship game for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Like most people, Joanie and I like to eat.  This past time becomes more acute during the holiday season where there is always plenty of food around.  It was because of this dynamic that we thought, hey, once we've spent the holidays stuffing ourselves, wouldn't it be great to help out those trying to make ends meet.  We are donating the remainder of our grocery money to a Columbus area soup kitchen.

Why $1 a day?  To answer that, I must revisit my college days.  I had always prided myself in the fact that I was a guy yet could still handle a skillet.  I could make a stir-fry as good as Chef Emerald or any of those other TV Chefs.  (That's what I would tell myself.)  I was good, but  I was also cheap.  I had told many of my college friends that if I had to, I could eat,  on just $1 a day.  I never did try that out, so now here is my chance and I'm taking Joanie down with me.  I'll post the the full menu on the website latter on this month.  I also want to put the meals into a cookbook for college students and others who are trying to make ends meet.
